Garden maintenance in Stourbridge – local, reliable, personal

Stourbridge has some of the largest gardens we look after, particularly around Oldswinford, Pedmore and Norton. Bigger plots need a plan rather than an hour here and there, and that is what a regular visit gives you.

Gardens in Stourbridge

Stourbridge sits on sandstone, and the soil through much of the town is lighter and free-draining compared with the heavy clay you hit further into the Black Country. Lawns drain well and are workable earlier in the year, but they also dry out faster and need feeding more often, because nutrients wash straight through.

The Victorian and Edwardian villas around Oldswinford and Pedmore came with generous plots and mature trees, and many still have them. That means real shade, leaf fall that has to be dealt with properly in autumn, and lawns that thin out under tree canopies.

What we see most in Stourbridge

  • Large, established gardens

Plots that need a proper maintenance schedule rather than an occasional blitz, particularly through the growing season.

  • Mature trees and shade

Wonderful to sit under, hard on a lawn. Shaded grass thins and mosses up, and needs a different approach from open lawn.

  • Light, sandy soil

Drains quickly and warms early, but dries out in summer and loses feed fast. Mulching borders makes a noticeable difference.

What we cover here

  • Scheduled maintenance on larger gardens, with the work spread sensibly through the year.
  • Autumn leaf clearance, which on these plots is a genuine job rather than an afterthought.
  • Keeping thin, shaded lawn under tree canopies cut sensibly rather than scalped.
  • Mulching established borders to hold moisture in the lighter soil.

Worth knowing locally

Mary Stevens Park in Norton is a good local reference point for what mature planting and open lawn look like when they are properly kept. It was given to the town in 1931 and holds a Green Flag award, and the mix of specimen trees and open grass is much the same challenge as a large Stourbridge back garden, just at a different scale.

Questions about garden maintenance in Stourbridge

Shade always limits how lush grass will get, and raising the cut height is the first thing worth trying. Tell us what yours is doing and we will give you an honest view on what is realistic under those trees.

We do, and Stourbridge has plenty of them. For bigger plots we usually agree a schedule that spreads the work across the year rather than trying to do everything on one visit.

Cleared through the season rather than in one go at the end. Leaves left lying on a lawn will kill the grass underneath within a few weeks, so on tree-heavy plots it is worth doing little and often.
